HPV Human Papilloma Virus Elimination Program

What is HPV Human Papilloma Virus?

Human Papilloma virus is so common that almost everyone, women and men, will be exposed to one of its strains during their lifetime. There are more than 180 different strains of this virus, 40 of which may infect the genitals.

The HPV virus is usually transmitted through sexual intercourse. The use of male condom, may reduce the risk of infection, but it cannot prevent the transmission of the virus if it is in a skin area which is not covered by the condom.

HPV virus is entirely responsible for cervical cancer in women and other rarer forms of cancer for both genders, including head and neck, penis and anal cancers.

What actions does PASYKAF take against HPV?

In 2010 PASYKAF started the HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV) Comprehensive Eradication Program through which, systematically provides information to the public.

Within the framework of the program and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, PASYKAF accomplished in 2016 the implementation of free Human Papilloma Virus vaccination program for girls aged 12 years. In 2020 PASYKAF also achieved the implementation of free HPV vaccination program for adolescent girls and boys, ages 11-12 and 364 days through the General Health System (GESY).

Starting from January 1st, 2024, the age groups eligible for free vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) will change and will only apply to girls and boys aged 11-13.
